Pre-Emergent Herbicide Timing Guide for Northern Lawns (Crabgrass & More)

The most common mistake I see is applying pre-emergent too early or too late. Calendar dates are useless — soil temperature is what matters.

The Soil Temperature Rule

  • Crabgrass begins germinating when soil temperature at 2–4 inches reaches 55–60°F for several consecutive days.
  • Goosegrass waits until about 60–65°F.
  • Foxtail / Barnyardgrass similar to crabgrass.
Rule of Thumb: Soil temperature, not the calendar, sets the date. On the southern edge of cool-season country, soils can hit the magic 55°F by late March; through the middle it’s usually mid- to late April; across the northern tier and at elevation it’s often May.

Best Application Windows (2026 Guide)

RegionTarget WindowProduct Notes
Southern edge (Zones 6–7)March 20 – April 5Can split application (½ now + ½ in 4 weeks)
Middle (Zones 5–6)April 5 – April 20Single app or split works well
Northern (Zone 5)April 15 – May 1Watch the forecast — cold snaps can delay
Far north (Zones 3–4) & elevationLate April – mid-MayGo by soil temperature, not the date

Pro Tips for Success

  • Apply before a light rain (¼–½”) or water in within 2–3 days. The barrier must be activated.
  • Do not aerate or disturb the soil after application — you’ll break the chemical barrier.
  • For heavy crabgrass pressure, consider a split application (two lighter rates 4–6 weeks apart).
  • Pre-emergents also suppress some broadleaf weeds (henbit, chickweed) when timed right.

Common active ingredients that perform well in our climate: prodiamine (Barricade), dithiopyr (Dimension — also has early post-emergent activity), and pendimethalin.
