About the expert

The Short Grass is built from a career on golf course turf — then translated for homeowners across the northern US, with real soil, real weather, and real budgets.

I spent years as a golf course superintendent. The work was simple to describe and hard to do: grow turf that can take traffic, weather, and scrutiny, then keep it that way. Home lawns fail for the same reasons fairways fail: wrong grass, wrong height, wet nights, and fertility that doesn’t match the soil.

This site is the practical version of that. Built for cool-season lawns across the northern US, from a career in Ohio and Illinois. No miracle products. The same cultural controls we used on the course: mowing, water, air movement, soil tests, and timing.
