Complete Visual Guide to Identifying Common Northern Lawn Weeds

The earlier you identify a weed, the easier and cheaper it is to control. This guide covers the most common culprits in northern cool-season lawns, with notes on when cultural practices alone can win the battle.

Key Weeds and Quick ID

  • Crabgrass — Light green, wide blades, finger-like seed heads. Germinates when soil hits ~55°F.
  • Dandelion — Deep taproot, yellow flowers, puffball seeds. Easy to spot but hard to kill without getting the root.
  • Nutsedge — Triangular stem, shiny leaves, grows faster than grass in wet areas.
  • Clover (white) — Three leaflets, white flowers. Actually fixes nitrogen; many people now encourage microclover.
  • Chickweed — Small white flowers, low growing, loves cool moist spring conditions.
Pro Tip: A thick, healthy lawn is your best weed control. Most weeds are opportunists that take advantage of thin turf or compaction.
