Repairing Bare Spots and Thin Areas: Patch Repair vs Full Renovation

Bare spots and thin patches are common in northern lawns. The key is knowing when a simple patch will hold and when you’re better off renovating the whole area.

When to Patch

  • Spots smaller than 2-3 feet across
  • Caused by pet urine, isolated grub damage, or mechanical injury
  • Surrounding turf is healthy and dense
Patch Recipe: Loosen soil 2-3″, mix in compost, seed with matching variety at 4-6 lbs per 1,000 sq ft, keep consistently moist until established.

When to Renovate

Large thin areas, widespread weed invasion, or thatch/compaction issues usually warrant a full renovation rather than fighting patches for years.
