Aeration, Topdressing & Vertical Mowing: When and How for Home Lawns

These three practices are the backbone of a healthy lawn on heavy soils. Done at the right time and intensity, they can dramatically improve drainage, reduce thatch, and help grass roots go deeper.

Core Aeration

Best in early fall or early spring when grass is actively growing. Pull plugs 2-3 inches deep, 2-3 inches apart. Leave the plugs on the lawn — they break down and help mix soil.

Topdressing After Aeration

Apply 1/8″ to 1/4″ of screened compost or sand/soil mix and drag it into the holes. This is when topdressing does the most good.

Warning: Aggressive vertical mowing (power raking) can do more harm than good on many lawns. Use it sparingly and only when thatch is truly excessive (over 1/2 inch).
