7 Golf Course Techniques You Can Safely Use at Home
These are the techniques that separate good home lawns from great ones. Used correctly, they deliver noticeable improvements in density, smoothness, and playability (or walkability) without the heavy chemical programs of the past.
- 1. Light Frequent Rolling
Using a lightweight roller (or even a water-filled drum roller on low PSI) 1-2x per week during peak growth periods can dramatically improve smoothness and help with minor thatch. Do not overdo it on clay soils.
- 2. Light Vertical Mowing / Dethatching
Once or twice per year in spring or fall at shallow depth (1/8″ to 1/4″) to stand up runners and remove dead material. Not the same as aggressive power raking.
- 3. Targeted Topdressing
Applying 1/8″ to 1/4″ of screened compost or sand/soil mix after aeration or heavy verticutting levels the surface and introduces biology.
The remaining techniques (PGRs, dew removal, etc.) are covered in the full article and companion video.
