Compost Topdressing: Rates, Timing, and Benefits for Clay Soils

Topdressing with compost is one of the best things you can do for the heavy clay soils so many northern yards sit on. It improves structure, adds biology, and slowly builds thatch into a living soil layer.

Recommended Rates

  • Light annual topdress: 1/8″ to 1/4″ (about 1 cubic yard per 1,000 sq ft)
  • After aeration: up to 1/2″ worked into the holes
  • New lawn or major renovation: 1/2″ to 1″ incorporated into the top 4-6″
Pro Move: Use only well-screened, mature compost (no large chunks, earthy smell, not hot). Cheap “compost” from some sources is often just ground wood or manure that can do more harm than good.

Best Timing Up North

Early fall (late August through September) is ideal. Spring topdressing is also beneficial but avoid applying right before heavy rain that could wash it around.
